Shopping in Khao Lak

The best shopping city in the country is undeniable Bangkok. Unfortunately, Khao Lak does not quite measure up to the competition from the capital, but a traveler who is looking to buy clothes, shoes and souvenirs would not be disappointed.

In Thailand the currency is Baht. A Baht is composed of 100 Satang, but the Satang coins are almost never used because of the small value. Baht coins are in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10. The notes are in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 baht.

The souvenir shops around the main street (Phetkasem Road) and Lao On Village is opening in the afternoon, when the temperature is starting to drop a few degrees. Here you can find local products, swim wear, copies from Billabong, Lacoste, Ed Hardy, Adidas, etc., DVD movies, cheap sunglasses, slippers, sandals and jewelry.

You can and should bargain in most markets and shops in Khao Lak (and in Thailand). Exceptions apply in convenience stores (like 7-Eleven) and department stores, etc. In the Thai department stores and the official brand stores you'll not find counterfeit clothing, but only original goods.

Glasses are relatively cheap in Thailand and available in local optician chains such as KT Optic and Top Charoen Optical. These stores also sell sunglasses (original products) of famous brands like Ray Ban, Gucci, Versace and Oakley. Sometimes they have special sales and you might be able to bargain a bit.

There are also tailors in Khao Lak, which makes suits, shirts, skirts, blouses and dresses. Remember to bargain hard. When the seller is getting a bit impatient or refuses to negotiate more, then you can be almost sure that you have reached "your best price". Also make sure that the fabric that the tailor use is of good quality.

On the main street above Nang Thong Beach you'll found a relatively large supermarket called "Nang Thong Super Market". This shop offers local and imported food, alcoholic drinks, sweets and snacks, sunscreen lotions and other odds and ends.

La On Village and the central parts of Khao Lak has a number of tattoo artists, internet cafes, camera shops and art studios (where they plagiarize popular artists' work or make oil or acryl portrait paintings for sale).

ATM's are available in all of Khao Lak and there are also a few money changers and small banks.
